—My father's words over 30 years ago.

I moved from a small school, in a small town,

to a large middle school in the 7th grade.

I was immediately pushed into the water fountain,

coming away with a cracked lip. 

That night, with a swollen lip,

and empowerment from my father’s words,

I made a choice to take ownership of my behavior

and be a leader in the world.
